Kenya Launches Ecosort Initiative for Waste Recovery and Green Transformation
Kenya's Ecosort initiative aims to transform waste management through decentralized recovery models, addressing urban waste challenges. By establishing pilot units, the initiative seeks to empower local waste collectors and promote the circular economy, with a goal to scale to 3,000 units nationally by 2030.

The Ecosort initiative in Kenya, launched on World Environment Day, introduces three decentralized waste recovery models aimed at enhancing waste management. Supported by UNDP, TakaTaka Ni Mali Foundation, and other partners, the project features four pilot units designed as community recovery hubs, each costing approximately Sh3 million.
These units enable residents to return recyclable materials, measure their weight, and receive payments via the EcoMali digital platform, following the steps: Rejesha, Pima, and Lipwa. With urban waste projected to increase to 5.5 million tonnes annually by 2030, the initiative addresses the need for improved recycling systems.
Plans to expand to 3,000 units nationwide will require financial partnerships to sustain operations and foster job creation for Kenya's youth, who represent 75% of the population. As the initiative progresses, it aims to streamline logistics, enhance market access, and increase earnings for waste collectors, contributing to a stronger circular economy.
