Kenya Plans 90MW Hydropower Project on Tana River to Enhance Electricity Generation
Kenya's Treasury is updating a feasibility study for a 90 MW hydropower project at Tana River to attract private investment. This initiative aims to meet rising electricity demand as the country faces a generation shortfall.

The National Treasury of Kenya is advancing plans for a 90 MW hydropower plant within the Tana River cascade, specifically between Kindaruma and Kiambere stations. An expert is being recruited to assess the feasibility study, tariff structure, and project implementation under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
The plant will utilize the residual hydraulic head of the Tana River, featuring a diversion weir, reservoir system, and necessary infrastructure for integrating clean energy into the national grid. Peak electricity demand reached 2,439 MW in December 2025, highlighting the urgent need for increased generation capacity amid a growing consumer base exceeding 10 million.
The country imported 1,274.42 GWh from Ethiopia in the fiscal year ending June 2025, which has become a crucial supplier to mitigate power shortages. Rising electricity costs have prompted many Kenyans to invest in solar PV as an alternative energy source.
