Kenya to Implement 'Death Certificates' for Decommissioned Vehicles in New Regulation
Kenya is introducing a regulation requiring end-of-life vehicles to undergo inspection and receive a 'death certificate' for decommissioning. This initiative aims to enhance vehicle lifecycle tracking and promote recycling, addressing road safety and environmental concerns linked to second-hand vehicle imports.

Kenya will mandate inspections and issue 'death certificates' for decommissioned vehicles to authorize their recycling. Approximately 400,000 vehicles are recorded in the NTSA database as non-operational, highlighting the need for this regulation.
This policy aligns with regional efforts among East African Community (EAC) states to implement the East African Automotive Assembly & Manufacturing regulations by 1 July 2026. The initiative aims to bolster the country's circular economy in the transport sector and improve national vehicle record accuracy. Implementation details regarding the decommissioning certificate framework are anticipated soon, indicating potential shifts in the automotive industry landscape.
