Kenya's Coastal Mineral Rush: New Mining Projects and Environmental Concerns
Kenya's mining sector is gaining momentum with new projects in the Coast region aimed at niobium, rare earth elements, and manganese. Proposed mining activities, including a coltan project in Kora National Park, raise significant environmental concerns amid a push for local processing of minerals.

Kenya is focusing on expanding its mining sector, particularly in the Coast region, which shows promise for minerals like niobium and rare earth elements. Recently, Maboka Mining Limited submitted an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for mining in Kora National Park, where coltan, beryllium, and cerium are targeted, estimated at Sh461 million for processing.
In Kilifi, Leibra Investments Limited applied for a manganese mining license, highlighting its growing role in electric vehicle batteries. The manganese market is projected to grow from $32.98 billion in 2026 to $45.35 billion by 2032. As the government seeks to commercialize these resources, environmental and community welfare issues remain pressing, with legal challenges against some projects indicating potential public opposition.
