Kenya's Treasury Approves Ksh 3.45 Billion Street Lighting Project in Eldoret
The National Treasury of Kenya approved the Ksh 3.45 billion project for solar-powered street lighting in Eldoret City, advancing to contract negotiations under a public-private partnership. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency and public safety while transitioning to renewable energy sources.

On April 10, the National Treasury approved a Ksh 3.45 billion project for Eldoret City, allowing contract negotiations to commence under a public-private partnership framework. This project includes a 3MWac solar photovoltaic power plant with a 9MWh Battery Energy Storage System, designed to power street lighting and municipal facilities independently from the national grid.
Planned improvements feature the installation of 12,000 new LED streetlights, conversion of existing street lights to solar energy, and a comprehensive underground fibre-optic network for monitoring. The initiative supports Eldoret's development as a 24-hour economy, with expectations to enhance public safety and reduce crime. This upgrade marks a significant milestone in modernizing the city following its elevation to city status nearly two years ago.
