Kerala Implements Power Curbs Amid Record Electricity Demand
Kerala will impose daily power curbs of less than 30 minutes from 6 PM to midnight to address grid stability amid soaring demand. This follows an unprecedented rise in electricity consumption due to extreme heat, with peak usage reaching 118.26 million units recently.

Kerala's Chief Engineer of the State Load Despatch Centre has been authorized to implement load shedding to maintain grid stability as electricity demand surges during extreme heat. The state is experiencing a shortfall of 200 MW from central generating stations, with average daily demand rising to approximately 5,800 MW, significantly higher than last year.
As of April 23, peak demand reached a record 6,135 MW with a shortfall of 292 MW. Kerala's reliance on external sources for over 70% of its power exposes it to vulnerabilities, especially as reservoir levels are low, limiting hydropower generation. The state has not faced such shortages in the past three years, raising concerns about future energy management.
