Kier, Aecom, and T&T Selected for £200M Fusion Power Plant in Nottinghamshire
The UK government has appointed the ILIOS consortium, including Kier, Turner & Townsend, Aecom, and Bam Nuttall, to construct a £200 million prototype fusion power plant at the former West Burton Power Station in Nottinghamshire, set to open in 2040. The project aims to establish the UK as a leader in fusion research and is expected to support around 8,000 jobs at its peak. It is part of the STEP Fusion program, which seeks to develop a domestically driven fusion energy industry.

The ILIOS consortium, comprising Kier, Turner & Townsend, Aecom, Bam Nuttall, and AL_A, has been awarded a £200 million contract to build a prototype fusion power plant at the former West Burton Power Station in Nottinghamshire, scheduled to open in 2040. This project is part of the UK government's STEP Fusion program, aimed at promoting fusion research and energy independence.
The redevelopment of the site, which closed in 2023, is projected to create approximately 8,000 jobs during peak construction. The initiative also includes the development of a powerful fusion supercomputer, supported by £45 million in government funding.
