Kinosao Sipi Begins Production at First Nation-owned Magnesium Mine in Manitoba
Kinosao Sipi, the Norway House Cree Nation, has received an amended environmental license for a magnesium mining project in Manitoba, aiming to position the province as Canada's magnesium capital. The project, which is fully First Nation-owned, is licensed to produce 10,000 tonnes per day and could start operations in 2027. The province has provided $2 million in support for the project's first phase, which includes creating 20 permanent jobs and training for over 50 participants.

The Kinosao Sipi, also known as Norway House Cree Nation, has received an amended environmental license for its magnesium mining project in Manitoba, marking it as Canada's first critical minerals project fully owned by a First Nation. The project aims to produce 10,000 tonnes of materials per day, with plans to begin production in 2027, contingent on securing around $1.3 billion in funding.
The province has allocated $2 million to support the initial phase, which is expected to create 20 permanent jobs and provide training for over 50 First Nation participants. The project will quarry dolomite for magnesium production while ensuring environmental protections.
