Kit Carson Electric Coop Launches Amalia II Solar and Battery Facility in New Mexico

ENERGY STORAGE

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative (KCEC) inaugurated the Amalia II Solar and Battery Facility on December 18, adding 8.75 megawatts of solar generation and 8.75 megawatts of battery storage. This project increases KCEC's renewable energy capacity to approximately 51 megawatts of solar and 25 megawatts of battery storage.

Located next to the existing Amalia I solar array, Amalia II integrates into the local energy system, enhancing grid reliability and supporting wildfire mitigation. KCEC partnered with the Rio Costilla Cooperative Livestock Association, Guzman Energy, and Luminace, with a 25-year power purchase agreement established for energy procurement.

The facility also aids emergency services during outages and contributes to peak demand management. Amalia II is KCEC's 21st solar project and third battery storage installation, aligning with its broader clean-energy strategy.
