Kolkata Metro Launches Battery Energy Storage System to Enhance Efficiency and Safety on Blue Line

ENERGY STORAGEPOWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION

Metro Railway Kolkata has implemented a 6.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on its Blue Line, specifically along the 17 km underground stretch between Dumdum and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar. This initiative enhances energy efficiency and ensures passenger safety during power outages.

The BESS, capable of moving trains at 55 km/hr and powering tunnel ventilation systems, was developed with Delta Electronics India. It marks India's first microgrid system at a metro station and is expected to improve overall energy efficiency and operational reliability. Future plans include adding components to absorb excess regenerative energy.
