Kolkata Metro Secures Rs 671.72 Crore for North-South Corridor Enhancement
The Kolkata Metro Railway has received Rs 671.72 crore for upgrades to the North-South Corridor, crucial for increasing operational capacity. This funding will facilitate the installation of new substations and power supply improvements to meet rising passenger demands.

An investment of Rs 671.72 crore has been approved for the enhancement of the North-South Corridor of Kolkata Metro Railway. This includes the construction of seven new traction substations costing Rs 291.06 crore, and an upgrade of the power supply system, raising capacity from 11 KV to 33 KV, estimated at Rs 380.66 crore.
The current system, designed in the 1980s, struggles to meet increasing passenger demand with trains originally scheduled every five minutes. Modernization is critical as existing substations approach capacity limits and face maintenance issues. The upgrades are anticipated to support train operations at 2.5-minute intervals, improving service frequency and overall passenger experience.
