Korean Government and KR Launch International Standards Initiative for Ammonia Effluent Discharge
Korea's KR and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries have initiated a working group to develop international standards for ammonia effluent discharge from ammonia-fueled ships. This follows a proposal at the IMO in 2024, which received approval in 2025. The group aims to submit draft standards to the IMO by 2027, enhancing Korea's role in global ammonia management discussions.

KR (Korean Register) and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, along with five major Korean shipbuilders and the Korea Testing & Research Institute, launched an international working group in June 2025 to create safety management standards for ammonia effluent from ammonia-fueled ships. This initiative stems from Korea's 2024 proposal at the IMO, approved in April 2025.
The group convened on February 5, 2026, at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center, planning to submit draft standards to the IMO by 2027. Korea aims to establish guidelines for ammonia effluent management, enhancing its maritime industry's competitiveness in the emerging ammonia-fueled ship market.
