The University of Kansas (KU) is in the fifth year of a federally funded $7.7 million project aimed at reinforcing U.S. dams and levees. This initiative involves collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Army Engineer Research and Development Center.
Researchers are utilizing fiber-reinforced polymer materials (FRPs) for dam repairs, addressing issues like sliding and cracking. Advanced technologies like AI and machine learning support efficient structural inspections, allowing for real-time damage mapping.
The project has been applied to notable structures including the Tuttle Creek Dam and Upriver Dam. The initiative is expected to conclude in April 2027, transitioning findings into practical applications. This research may significantly enhance infrastructure resilience and public safety across the U.S.
