Kyrgyzstan Advances Green Energy Initiatives with Multiple Hydropower and Solar Projects in 2025
In 2025, Kyrgyzstan prioritized the development of green energy, emphasizing renewable energy capacity expansion and modernization of facilities to meet rising electricity demand. Key projects include the Orto-Tokoy hydropower plant, now 65% complete and expected to finish by mid-2026, and the Papan hydropower plant, with groundwork underway and a temporary power supply established.
The country plans to commission 12 new hydropower plants in 2026 and aims to construct 17 small HPPs in the same year. A significant solar power plant, with a capacity of 250 MW, is set for construction in Batken.
Additionally, the Asian Development Bank pledged over $800 million to support the Kambarata-1 hydropower project. Kyrgyzstan is also enhancing its regulatory framework to boost green energy investments, aiming for a 10% share of green energy by 2040.
