L.A. County Firefighters Union Raises Safety Concerns Over Battery Storage Facilities

ENERGY STORAGE

Firefighters Local 1014 sent a cease and desist notice to L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone regarding battery-energy storage systems (BESS) near residential areas, citing safety concerns due to past incidents at lithium-ion facilities.

The union expressed alarm over a proposed BESS facility next to a fire station in Industry. L.A. County is reviewing these concerns amid ongoing developments in battery storage projects, particularly in Canyon Country and Castaic. Residents have raised issues about proximity to fire stations, and a proposed ordinance for best practices in BESS siting remains in draft form, with environmental review expected to start after its completion.
