Labor Commits $1.4B to Renewable Energy Grid Expansion in Western Australia
Western Australia plans to invest $1.4 billion to connect the Perth power grid to renewable wind farms, aiming for cleaner energy. Despite the investment, the Energy Minister has not confirmed lower power bills nor ruled out a potential total cost of $20 billion for the project.

The Western Australian Government is set to allocate $1.4 billion towards the Clean Energy Link East project to connect Perth's power grid to renewable energy sources, which could power approximately one million homes. Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson highlighted the need for this overhaul to prevent rising power costs, although she did not guarantee lower bills and did not dismiss the possibility of total costs reaching $20 billion over two decades.
Premier Roger Cook emphasized the goal to retire coal-fired power stations by 2030, but acknowledged potential delays if energy shortfalls occur. The projects aim to deliver a combined three gigawatts of renewable energy by 2029, though concerns remain regarding timely completion and coordination with wind projects.
