Lagos State Launches Biogas Initiative for Sustainable Energy Transition
The Lagos State Government has formed a technical committee to enhance biogas and biomethane production, aiming to reduce fuel imports and promote clean energy. With daily organic waste generation at 13,000 metric tonnes, the initiative positions biogas as a key alternative to conventional diesel.
The Lagos State Government has initiated a technical committee focused on commercial biogas and biomethane production, aiming to decrease reliance on imported fuels. The committee, led by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, consists of representatives from various state agencies to coordinate implementation.
Lagos produces approximately 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, with a significant portion being organic, making it a viable feedstock for biogas production. The government has also transitioned 152 First and Last Mile buses to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), achieving a 50% reduction in fuel costs while transporting over 600,000 passengers since 2022.
The state is further developing a seven-line electric rail network and expanding its electric bus operations, which have successfully reduced emissions. These initiatives support the THEMES+ agenda focused on sustainable transport solutions and improved urban mobility. As the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu concludes, these foundational reforms highlight a commitment to modernizing Lagos's transport sector and enhancing environmental sustainability.
