Lake County Council to Vote on Data Center and Battery Storage Decommissioning Ordinances
The Lake County Council will vote on ordinances for decommissioning data centers and battery energy storage systems. Data centers inactive for over 15 months must be restored to pre-development conditions unless approved otherwise. Proposals must include decommissioning plans with cost estimates from licensed engineers. A proposed data center by Sentinel Data Centers aims to build on 160 acres in Eagle Creek Township, near a 300 MW battery storage facility approved last year.

The Lake County Council is set to vote on ordinances addressing the decommissioning of data centers and battery energy storage systems, requiring facilities inactive for over 15 months to restore sites unless otherwise approved. Data center owners must submit decommissioning plans, including estimates from licensed engineers.
Sentinel Data Centers plans to develop a data center on 160 acres near Lowell, adjacent to a previously approved 300 MW battery storage facility. The project's due diligence will continue through 2026, and the council is ensuring community concerns are addressed before finalizing ordinances.
