Laos Records High Electricity Exports to Vietnam Amid Renewable Energy Expansion
Laos exported 2.92 billion kWh of electricity to Vietnam in early 2026, marking a 120% increase from 2025. This surge is attributed to new renewable projects and enhanced transmission infrastructure, aligning with Vietnam's import goals.

In the first quarter of 2026, Laos exported 2.92 billion kWh of electricity to Vietnam, representing 3.8% of its total output and a nearly 120% increase from the previous year. By the end of 2025, Vietnam approved electricity imports from 47 Lao projects with a combined capacity of 8,260 MW, of which 2,379 MW were operational.
Key projects include the Monsoon Wind Power Project, a 600 MW facility, and the Truong Son Wind Farm, nearing completion at 250 MW. EVN aims to import 5,000 MW from Laos by 2030, increasing to 11,000 MW by 2050, indicating the growing reliance on renewable energy in the region. The expansion of transmission infrastructure, such as the Tuong Duong-Do Luong line, is crucial for meeting these targets.
