Latrobe Mining and Minerals produced about 20 tonnes of high-grade magnesium oxide (MgO) at its Hazelwood North Demonstration Plant in Victoria, confirming quality thresholds necessary for magnesium metal production set for late 2026. The $70 million facility converts coal ash into MgO using a patented extraction process and has a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per annum.
The current output shows over 90% magnesium compounds, with expected minor adjustments to improve purity. LMG plans to establish a commercial plant with a 10,000 tonnes per annum capacity by the first half of 2028, with all output allocated to the US market under an offtake agreement. The demonstration plant is set for a planned shutdown to install the magnesium metal production circuit.
