Latvia's Green Hydrogen Project in Liepāja Aims for 150,000 Tonnes Annual Production
Latvia is advancing its energy sector with a planned green hydrogen project in Liepāja, set to produce approximately 150,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This initiative aligns with global trends, as demand for green hydrogen is projected to grow significantly, from 25-50 million tonnes by 2030 to 400 million tonnes by 2050.
While Latvia is in the early stages of hydrogen adoption, forecasts indicate potential domestic demand could reach millions of tonnes by mid-century. The project utilizes electrolysis, a proven method of producing hydrogen without carbon emissions, ensuring safety and efficiency when adhering to established standards.
The Liepāja initiative represents a strategic investment in green technology, aiming to position Latvia within the evolving European clean energy landscape. Government support for clear, long-term hydrogen production targets is essential for fostering industry growth and attracting investment.
