Launch of HyCavern Project for Underground Hydrogen Storage in Europe
The HyCavern project has commenced with a consortium of 15 European partners focused on next-generation underground hydrogen storage. This initiative aims to develop solutions that address the limitations of existing storage options, facilitating hydrogen's role in Europe's energy transition.

The HyCavern project, led by SINTEF Industry, seeks to innovate underground hydrogen storage using mined, lined rock caverns. Over the next three years, the project will create advanced steel liner solutions, assess low-carbon concrete systems, develop simulation tools for cavern design, and integrate advanced monitoring technologies.
Key goals include enhancing storage scalability across diverse geological conditions and evaluating the techno-economic feasibility of these storage systems. Supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the consortium includes prominent research institutions and technology firms from multiple European countries. The project is positioned to strengthen hydrogen's role in balancing energy supply and demand, contributing to industrial decarbonization and energy security.
