Launch of T-MED Initiative to Enhance EU-MENA Energy Cooperation
The European Commission introduced the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-MED) on June 9. With a financial target of up to €25 billion by 2035, T-MED aims to develop 15 GW of renewable energy capacity and create over 100,000 jobs in clean energy sectors, addressing EU energy security and regional collaboration.

The T-MED initiative seeks to strengthen energy cooperation between the EU and southern Mediterranean partners, focusing on renewables and hydrogen. The program aims to mobilize €25 billion by 2035, leveraging over €5 billion from the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus.
The MENA region has a renewable potential exceeding 2,300 GW, significantly lower generation costs, and could become a competitive hub for renewable energy and clean-tech components. The T-MED Investment Platform, expected to launch in October 2026, will coordinate financing and project development, addressing the gap between renewable potential and actual implementation.
However, challenges remain, such as the projected 50% increase in electricity demand by 2035 and political instability in the region. Infrastructure developments like interconnections, HVDC cables, and smart grids are essential for market integration, with Italy positioned to play a key role in facilitating energy routes between North Africa and Europe.
