Lee Proposes Zoning Changes for Renewable Energy and Adaptive Reuse
Lee's upcoming town vote includes proposals for a temporary moratorium on Battery Energy Storage Systems and updates to the Adaptive Reuse Overlay District. These measures aim to ensure safety and regulatory compliance in the face of renewable energy expansion.

On May 8, Lee voters will consider a moratorium on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) following state mandates for renewable energy. The proposed pause could last until November 14 or until new bylaws are established.
Additionally, changes to the Adaptive Reuse Overlay District (AROD) aim to improve the repurposing of underutilized structures, expanding the types of buildings eligible for redevelopment. The AROD changes include allowing more flexible uses and extending redevelopment possibilities.
Concerns regarding the safety of BESS facilities have been raised, particularly due to fire hazards associated with lithium batteries. Local officials seek to ensure proper regulations are in place before allowing large-scale installations.
