LG Begins Mass Production of Sodium-Ion Batteries for Tesla EVs
LG is launching mass production of sodium-ion batteries to supply Tesla, aiming to compete with Chinese manufacturers like CATL. The new technology is expected to enhance safety and affordability, particularly in cold weather, and is supported by a supply agreement with Sinopec for key materials. Additionally, Tesla has upgraded its Model Y and Model 3 with LG's new NCM811 2170 cells, which offer improved energy density and faster charging.

LG, a major supplier for Tesla, is initiating mass production of sodium-ion batteries to compete with Chinese manufacturers like CATL. The sodium-ion technology promises enhanced safety and affordability, especially in cold weather.
LG plans to start sample production this year at its Nanjing factory, where it currently produces batteries for the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. The company has secured a supply agreement with Sinopec for key battery materials.
Sodium-ion batteries utilize sodium, a more abundant material, potentially offering lower manufacturing costs and improved performance compared to LFP batteries. Additionally, Tesla has upgraded its Model Y and Model 3 with new LG NCM811 2170 cells, providing higher energy density and faster charging capabilities. Despite concerns regarding the longevity of LG batteries compared to those from Panasonic, LG remains a key supplier for Tesla, now incorporating sodium-ion technology into its offerings.
