HYDRO POWER

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), led by Managing Director Mohammed M. Sherif, plans to achieve 500 megawatts (MW) of domestic power generation by 2030. This initiative includes enhancing domestic generation, rural electrification, and modernizing technology while reducing reliance on imported electricity from Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea.

Currently, LEC has 88MW installed at the Man Coffee Hydropower Plant, with 66MW operational. Sherif emphasized local content and job creation, with nearly 98% of staff being Liberians. LEC is also exploring partnerships with Independent Power Producers for renewable energy projects.

The government has allocated $50 million for smart metering to combat power theft. Sherif's Mission 300 initiative aims to connect 100,000 households to the grid, with ongoing projects in various counties. By 2029-2030, LEC anticipates a 500MW capacity, positioning Liberia for potential energy export to neighboring countries.
