Libya Approves National Water Security Strategy Targeting 2050
Libya's government has launched a National Water Security Strategy (NWSS) with a focus on demand reduction and resource diversification. This initiative, developed with UNDP and Italy's support, aims to address severe water scarcity and infrastructure challenges in the country.

On April 21, 2026, Libya's Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbibah officially launched the National Water Security Strategy (NWSS) in Tripoli. The strategy includes targets such as municipal water consumption below 150 liters per capita and a renewable resource mix of 75% by 2050.
Key components involve establishing a national Water Board, an independent regulator, and a centralized National Water Information System by 2027. The NWSS also emphasizes managing agricultural water use, which consumes 80-85% of Libya's supply. The strategy seeks to address institutional fragmentation and data gaps, with a focus on groundwater management and diversified supply sources, including expanded desalination and treated wastewater reuse.
