LIFE4ZOO Project Advances Water Reuse Solutions in Zoos
The LIFE4ZOO initiative showcases effective water reuse methods in zoos, aiming to reduce potable water consumption and enhance sustainability. Through collaborations in Liberec and Barcelona, the project employs advanced and nature-based technologies to recycle water, addressing water scarcity while ensuring animal welfare.

The LIFE4ZOO project implements innovative water reuse systems in zoos, achieving up to 50% water savings at Zoo Liberec through a two-loop system that treats and recirculates used water. In Barcelona, a pilot program refines treatment processes, using constructed wetlands and ultrafiltration to ensure water quality for various applications, including irrigation and cleaning.
The combined efforts from both zoos demonstrate the adaptability of these systems to local conditions and highlight the need for flexible approaches to water management. As water scarcity rises, these methods could serve as models for broader applications in parks and public spaces, promoting sustainable resource management.
