Limburg Plans Hydrogen Pipeline from Ravenstein to Schinnen with Connection to Chemelot
The Dutch government, in collaboration with Gasunie's Hynetwork, plans to build an underground hydrogen pipeline from Ravenstein to Schinnen, with a branch to the Chemelot industrial area, to support the transition to sustainable energy. Existing natural gas pipelines will be repurposed, minimizing visible construction impacts, while new sections will be developed with public input sought from January 23 to March 5. Construction is anticipated to begin no earlier than 2030, with information sessions for residents planned to discuss the project's implications.

The Dutch government, in partnership with Gasunie's Hynetwork, is planning to construct a new underground hydrogen pipeline from Ravenstein to Schinnen, including a branch to the Chemelot industrial area in Sittard-Geleen. This hydrogen network aims to facilitate the transition to sustainable energy, providing an alternative to natural gas for industries, particularly Chemelot, which is a major energy consumer.
Existing natural gas pipelines will be repurposed for hydrogen transport, minimizing new above-ground interventions. A new pipeline section will be built between Melick and Hommelhof, with limited visible construction impacts.
The project will undergo a permission process, with public input through the Statement of Intent and Participation Plan from January 23 to March 5. Actual construction is not expected to start before 2030. Information sessions for residents will be held to discuss planning and impacts.
