Lorain County commissioners approved a $3.2 million consulting contract with K.E. McCartney & Associates on February 13 for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and adjoining sewer system.

The project involves the Quarry Road Sanitary Trunk Sewer Extension in Vermilion. The original estimated cost of $85-$100 million was reduced to $15-$20 million through collaboration between city and county officials.

In February 2024, Vermilion City Council supported the project, which aims to improve water quality in Lake Erie and foster economic development. Infrastructure improvements are expected to increase the county's tax base and revenue for the General Fund.
