Los Alamos to Conduct Nuclear Research at Proposed U-M Data Center in Ypsilanti Township

DEFENSEDATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Los Alamos National Laboratory confirmed that its section of a proposed University of Michigan data center in Ypsilanti Township will be used for nuclear weapons research, including simulations for plutonium pit development. One of the two planned computers will manage secret restricted data for the nuclear program.

Local residents have expressed concerns about environmental impacts and nuclear research. Meanwhile, Concord Infrastructure Partners proposed a $285 million data center to nine Michigan communities, requesting commitments within 48 hours, but no communities agreed.

Former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, now a gubernatorial candidate, proposed regulations for data centers to protect groundwater. Blackstone is evaluating a larger investment in Oracle's data center in Saline Township, while the local board rescinded a rezoning decision affecting the Oracle project. Howell Township is drafting regulations for data centers following resident backlash.
