Louisiana Critics Demand Transparency in Industrial Project Negotiations Amid Job Creation Promises

Critics in Louisiana are calling for an end to secret business negotiations linked to major industrial projects, claiming these lack transparency and endanger community health. During a hearing by Louisiana Economic Development, community activists raised concerns over taxpayer funds being allocated to large companies without public input.

They highlighted Gov. Jeff Landry's 'Louisiana Lightning Speed Initiative,' which aims to expedite industrial expansion and includes projects with Meta, Hyundai, and CF Industries. Meta's data center project in Richland Parish, announced in December 2024, was revealed to a select group of politicians before the public.

Activists criticized the use of nondisclosure agreements, which prevent local officials from discussing projects. They also pointed out that promised job creation often fails to benefit local residents, citing environmental hazards in areas known as 'Cancer Alley.' Hyundai's steel mill is projected to create 1,300 jobs, while CF Industries expects to add 103 jobs in Ascension Parish, with significant state incentives offered for both projects.
