Louisiana Regulators Approve Policy Allowing Ratepayers to Cover Data Center Infrastructure Costs
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREPOWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION
The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) has implemented a new policy enabling utility firms to expedite infrastructure proposals for large customers, particularly AI data centers. Under this policy, utilities may pass up to 75% of capital costs to ratepayers while only requiring the data centers to cover half of the costs.
The process eliminates competitive bidding requirements, potentially inflating costs. The LPSC aims to approve projects within eight months, raising concerns about the reliability of the power grid amidst increasing demand. A competing proposal for stakeholder input on data center regulation was deferred.
