Louisville MSD Addresses Odor Complaints and Upgrades Infrastructure After UPS Crash

HYDROGEN

Louisville's Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) has cleared 880,000 gallons of oily runoff from waterways since the Nov. 4 UPS crash, responding to odor complaints primarily caused by hydrogen sulfide from decomposing debris. MSD is replacing untrapped catch basins in older neighborhoods to mitigate odors, with upgrades completed in Park DuValle and California.

Major upgrades at the Morris Forman wastewater treatment plant include a new biosolids processing facility expected to be completed by September 30, 2028, and a hydrogen sulfide removal system due by July 2026. Additionally, a settlement with JBS Foods includes a $500,000 compensation fund for residents near the Swift pork processing plant, which has faced complaints about odors.

The settlement also mandates the installation of a new odor-reduction system. MSD continues to monitor neighborhoods weekly for odor issues.
