Lower Similkameen Indian Band Calls for Protection of Endangered Similkameen River Amid Mine Expansion Concerns
The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) is demanding the protection of nməlqytkʷ (Similkameen River), which was declared one of B.C.'s most endangered rivers by the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. (ORCBC).
This declaration comes as the provincial government is considering an expansion of Hudbay Minerals' Copper Mountain Mine, raising concerns about potential pollution. The LSIB stresses that the river's health is vital to the sməlqmíx people.
The ORCBC's list also includes the Kettle River, emphasizing concerns over land use and climate impacts. The proposed mine expansion could affect water quality and flow, prompting calls for more consultation with First Nations and careful consideration of environmental standards.
