Lurssen Celebrates 150 Years of Innovation in Shipbuilding

This summer, Lurssen, the renowned family-run shipbuilder, marks its 150th anniversary since its founding on June 27, 1875, by Friedrich Lurssen. Initially, the company gained acclaim for its exquisitely crafted rowboats and became the pioneer of the worldás first motorboat, developed in collaboration with Gottlieb Daimler in 1886. This six-meter vessel, named Rems, showcased innovative engineering and established Lurssen's legacy of quality, craftsmanship, and visionary design.

Peter Lurssen, the current leader, expressed profound pride in the companyás evolution, attributing its success to the dedication of its employees across generations. Lurssen remains committed to innovation and sustainability, having introduced numerous industry standards, including the world's first hybrid propulsion system and an advanced wastewater treatment system. Its latest endeavor includes the development of a methanol-powered fuel cell system for the 114-meter yacht, Cosmos, aiming for a carbon-neutral future.

Lurssen operates three shipyards in northern Germany and an engineering center in Croatia, employing around 2,000 staff. Since establishing its dedicated yacht division in 1988, Lurssen has delivered 70 bespoke yachts, including notable vessels such as Azzam, Dilbar, and Octopus, which rank among the world's largest and most complex yachts.

In addition to its commitment to luxury yacht construction, Lurssen actively supports ocean conservation initiatives through partnerships with organizations like Blue Marine Foundation, protecting over 4.4 million square kilometers of ocean. The newly founded Lurssen Foundation aims to foster engineering talent and support impactful innovations in the maritime industry.

As Lurssen celebrates its storied past, it looks ahead with aspirations of continuing to lead the industry in quality, performance, and sustainability.
