Luxembourg Airport De-Icing Wastewater Linked to Stream Pollution Investigation

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

Authorities are investigating a potential link between wastewater from de-icing operations at Luxembourg Airport and pollution in the Stackelgesgriecht stream, located in the Birelergronn nature reserve. Roland Fox from the National Roads Administration acknowledged that while no intentional dumping occurred, discharges from the airport could have contributed to contamination.

The Water Management Authority was notified of the pollution a week ago, though laboratory analyses are pending to confirm the source. Environmental groups criticize the airport's practice of discharging wastewater into the stream when sewage treatment capacity is exceeded, claiming ecological damage has resulted.

The National Roads Administration reported using 45 tonnes of grit and 220 cubic meters of de-icing agents each winter. A wastewater treatment plant expansion is planned for completion by the end of 2027 to address these environmental concerns.
