Luzerne County Planning Commission Advances Data Center Zoning Discussions
Luzerne County's Planning Commission will continue discussions on a data center zoning amendment affecting 19 municipalities, with a potential vote scheduled for May 14. Proposed changes include increased landscape buffer widths and stipulations for water usage and lighting aesthetics.

The Luzerne County Planning Commission is revisiting a data center zoning amendment that would impact 19 municipalities, with a vote anticipated on May 14. Amendments propose a landscape buffer width increase from 50 to 100 feet between data centers and nearby sensitive areas, including residences and schools, along with a drought contingency plan for water usage.
Aesthetics regulations require all lighting to be fully enclosed to prevent visibility from residential properties. Other agenda items include zoning permits for battery energy storage systems with capacities over 600 kilowatt-hours and a buffer yard requirement for new industrial developments adjacent to residential areas. The revisions aim to ensure thorough consideration and compliance with best practices.
