Macalester College to Implement Geothermal Energy in New Residence Hall by 2027
Macalester College is constructing a new residence hall and welcome center, set to open in August 2027, featuring geothermal heating and cooling systems. This initiative aims to support the college's decarbonization goal by transitioning away from natural gas by 2050.
Construction of a new five-story residence hall at Macalester College in St. Paul is underway, with an expected completion in August 2027. The building will accommodate 224 students and will utilize an innovative geothermal system, allowing the campus to take significant strides toward its decarbonization target.
Managed by Darcy Solutions, the project employs advanced geothermal technology developed at the University of Minnesota, drastically improving efficiency by using deep wells to access groundwater. This approach requires significantly less land than traditional methods, with only four 400-foot wells needed for the entire system. The successful implementation of this project could serve as a model for other urban universities looking to adopt sustainable energy solutions.
