Machrihanish Community Pursues £7 Million Spaceport Project
The Machrihanish Airbase Community Company (MACC) aims to secure a £7 million investment in a spaceport project, Invictus, which could revolutionize the local economy by creating high-quality jobs and revitalizing the community. The project is in competition with Cornwall for UK Government and European Space Agency support, with decisions expected in the next 12-18 months.

The Invictus project, led by Frazer-Nash and supported by the European Space Agency, targets a reusable aircraft capable of Mach 5 speed, aiming for its inaugural flight by early 2031. The initiative will utilize a 1000-acre former RAF airfield, purchased by MACC for £1, to establish a horizontal launch capacity in Scotland.
Community leaders emphasize the need for local consultations to ensure residents understand the project's implications. Invictus could generate hundreds of well-paid jobs and bring substantial economic benefits, addressing local depopulation issues. The area has historical ties to military aviation and previous attempts at space endeavors, which may provide a foundation for future success.
