MAHAGENCO Implements Sewage Water Reuse Initiatives for Thermal Power Stations in Maharashtra
MAHAGENCO is enhancing water sustainability by reusing treated sewage water at its thermal power stations, aiming to reduce reliance on freshwater. The initiative includes a project at the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station, using 50 MLD of treated sewage from the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation. Since December 2023, treated water has been utilized for cooling and ash handling, conserving 31.20 million litres of freshwater by December 2025. Additionally, a partnership with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has led to a 130 MLD sewage treatment plant for further reuse at thermal stations.

MAHAGENCO is advancing sustainable water management by reusing treated sewage water at thermal power stations in Maharashtra. A significant project at the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station utilizes 50 million litres per day (MLD) of tertiary treated sewage water, approved under the AMRUT Yojana.
The project, which began in December 2023, replaces freshwater from the Erai Dam for cooling and ash handling. MAHAGENCO also collaborates with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation on a 130 MLD sewage treatment plant to supply treated water to its power stations, contributing to the reuse of 190 MLD of treated wastewater and preserving freshwater resources.
