Maharashtra Implements Urban Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Policy to Address Water Crisis
Maharashtra's 2025 Urban Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Policy aims to treat 9,107 million liters of wastewater daily. The policy mandates wastewater reuse, establishes institutional frameworks, and aims for economic sustainability by 2030. Currently, only 47% of the wastewater is treated with 17% reused. The initiative also supports the state's goal of becoming a hub for data centers by providing a reliable water source while alleviating pressures on freshwater systems.

Maharashtra's Urban Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Policy, released in 2025, addresses the state's severe water crisis by mandating the treatment of 9,107 million liters of wastewater generated daily. Currently, only 47% of this wastewater is treated, with 17% reused.
The policy establishes City Wastewater Reuse and Management Plans that integrate municipal and state-level efforts, ensuring coherent implementation. It emphasizes treated wastewater as a resource, supporting economic sustainability and reliable water access for industries, particularly data centers. The Nagpur Model exemplifies successful municipal wastewater integration for industrial use.
