Makhachkala Residents Criticize Plans for New Ice Arena Amid Urgent Local Needs
Residents of Makhachkala have voiced their concerns over plans to construct a new ice arena, arguing that the allocated 60 million rubles would be better spent on urgent local needs, such as wastewater treatment. The announcement by Republic Head Sergei Melikov during a hockey tournament has drawn skepticism, as past promises for similar projects have gone unfulfilled, leading critics to prioritize essential infrastructure over costly sports facilities.

Residents of Makhachkala have criticized the authorities' plans to build a modern ice arena, questioning the allocation of funds amid pressing local issues. During a hockey tournament in Dagestan’s Khunzakh District, Republic Head Sergei Melikov announced intentions to develop winter sports and promised an ice arena.
However, locals argue that the 60 million rubles designated for the ice palace project, initially proposed in December 2019, should instead address urgent needs such as wastewater treatment. Previous plans for an ice palace were halted as the designated land was repurposed for high-rise buildings.
Critics express skepticism about the feasibility of the new project, recalling that past promises have remained unfulfilled. Activists and residents emphasize that funds should focus on essential infrastructure and local priorities rather than costly sports facilities.
