Malawi Revenue Authority Reports Improved Cargo Clearance Through Automation
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has automated customs risk profiling, enhancing cargo clearance efficiency. This initiative, supported by a $150 million World Bank project, aims to streamline trade processes and increase compliance.

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has implemented an upgraded Automated System for Customs Data (Asycuda) World, which has significantly reduced cargo clearance times by allowing customs officers to concentrate on high-risk consignments. The system processes import and export declarations and uses risk profiles to streamline inspections.
MRA officials report that the time needed to process containers has decreased, enabling quicker tax payments before goods reach inland centers. The project, part of the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project funded by the World Bank, aims to boost private-sector activity in Malawi and Mozambique corridors. In focusing resources on high-risk taxpayers, MRA enhances compliance but may still face challenges managing lower-risk consignments efficiently.
