Malaysia Halts Non-AI Datacentre Approvals, DCCI Expo Focuses on AI Advancements
On February 24, 2026, Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a halt on datacentre applications unless they contribute to AI. This marks a significant pivot towards establishing Malaysia as a leading datacentre market in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia has ceased approvals for datacentre projects not linked to high-tech and AI applications, as confirmed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This aligns with the objectives of the Datacentre & Cloud Infrastructure (DCCI) Expo, which aims to advance Malaysia's digital landscape.
The fifth edition of DCCI will feature key insights on AI infrastructure, sustainable design, and cyber resilience, with participation from the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and notable speakers including representatives from Nokia. The emphasis on collaboration among industry leaders indicates a strategic approach to enhancing datacentre capabilities in Malaysia and the ASEAN region. This shift could attract investments in AI technologies but may also limit opportunities for traditional datacentre projects.
