Malden Planning Board Proposes Data Center Ban and Advances Cannabis Dispensary
The Malden Planning Board has recommended a one-year moratorium and a citywide ban on standalone data centers while advancing a cannabis dispensary proposal. This move aims to assess the environmental and infrastructure impacts of data centers on the city.

On June 10, the Malden Planning Board unanimously recommended a one-year moratorium and a complete ban on standalone data centers to the City Council. This decision is intended to allow for a thorough evaluation of the impacts of data centers.
The board also moved forward with the cannabis dispensary proposal from DMS Trinity LLC, which faces delays since its special permit approval in April 2022. The board's recommendation includes a stipulation to prevent future transfers of the special permit to protect small businesses.
The planning board will reconvene on July 22 to address other pending projects, including a mixed-use condominium development. The proposed regulations and cannabis initiative reflect the board's proactive approach to urban planning amidst shifting regulatory landscapes.
