Malta's Desalinated Water Supply Reaches 71% in 2025
In 2025, reverse osmosis (RO) plants supplied 70.7% of Malta's tap water, a significant increase from previous years. This shift reflects a strategic move by the Water Services Corporation to enhance water quality and reduce reliance on groundwater, which has plummeted to a decade-low extraction level.

In 2025, Malta's Water Services Corporation (WSC) reported that 70.7% of the national water supply originated from reverse osmosis plants, an increase from 66.3% in 2024. Groundwater extraction fell to 11.5 million cubic metres, now representing less than 30% of the water supply.
RO production rose to 27.9 million cubic metres, marking a 4.3% increase year-on-year. The WSC's initiatives, including the Iftaħ u Ixrob campaign, aim to promote tap water consumption, resulting in one million fewer plastic water bottles used in 2025. However, the dependence on energy-intensive desalination raises concerns about water security as electricity costs rose to €20.1 million, while efficiency measures helped limit impacts on energy consumption.
