Marilyn Data Center in France Utilizes Natural Ventilation for Cooling
The Marilyn data center, located in Champs-sur-Marne, France, uses natural ventilation for cooling, known as 'free cooling', instead of conventional air conditioning or water cooling. It operates with a maximum internal temperature of 27°C, adjusting cooling strategies based on external temperatures.
The facility can manage airflow of 200,000 m³ per hour. In case of power outages, it employs a two-ton flywheel that maintains energy until backup generators activate. Marilyn operates year-round with a power capacity of 1 MW, sufficient to power 1,000 homes, and recycles heat generated by servers for building heating. CELESTE, the telecom operator, plans to construct a new AI-focused data center by 2026 and a similar facility in Switzerland by 2027.
