Marine Survey Equipment Lost in Yell Sound During SSEN Project
A magnetometer and tow cable were lost in Yell Sound during SSEN's HVAC project on May 20. This incident follows a similar loss of an ROV in 2022, raising concerns over communication between SSEN and local authorities.

On May 20, a magnetometer and approximately five meters of tow cable were lost during marine surveys related to SSEN's Yell HVAC project, aimed at connecting Shetland's wind farms to the mainland. This marks the second equipment loss in Yell Sound in four years, following an ROV loss in 2022.
Communication issues were noted, with the harbourmaster stating that SSEN failed to notify the harbour in a timely manner. SSEN has acknowledged the need for improved communication, committing to cooperate with local authorities for future projects. Additionally, ongoing surveys for a new HVDC cable and proposed offshore wind farms may increase the frequency of such incidents, necessitating enhanced stakeholder engagement.
