Marrakech to Receive Desalinated Water from Safi by July 2026
By the end of July, Greater Marrakech will receive 100 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually from Safi. This project, costing MAD 4.2 billion ($420 million), aims to alleviate water stress in the region, which has faced significant drought challenges.

Greater Marrakech is on track to receive desalinated water from Safi by the end of July 2026, transferring approximately 100 million cubic meters annually through 185.3 kilometers of pipelines. The project, with a budget of MAD 4.2 billion ($420 million), is in its final phase and will deliver a continuous flow of 3.2 cubic meters per second from a desalination plant operated by OCP Green Water.
It includes three pumping stations and a regulation reservoir, ensuring optimal water transfer to the city. This infrastructure is crucial for meeting the growing demands of Marrakech’s tourism sector and addressing the region's chronic water stress. Morocco's annual desalination capacity is currently 420 million cubic meters, with plans to increase it to 1.7 billion cubic meters, reflecting a broader strategy to combat water scarcity across the country.
